GoogleCloudPrintWhile they’ve been pushing their Android OS for all things cellular, for everything between tablets and desktops they’ve been trying to promote the proverbial cloud.  In many cases, this push for cloud supremacy has been accompanied by the pitching of their entirely cloud based operating system: Chrome.  The idea is sound in theory; a streamline OS that’s optimized for internet access, and designed to keep all of your information online instead of on your hard-drive.  The reality of a 100% cloud OS is much less glamorous and simple.  Because of the standards by which most computers are made, there will inevitably be certain things you just cannot do as efficiently as other people.  Well, fortunately Google has taken note of this, and is making an effort to deal with at least one of these inadequacies of cloud computing: printing issues.

Like I said previously, the PrePeat printer is definitely worth the extra upfront money even though the printer itself is $5500 and the paper is estimated at $3.36 per sheet.  So, how did I come to the conclusion that this "paperless" printer was worth the cost?  The calculation for the PrePeat was easy.  The printer is $5500 and the paper, essentially 1,000,000 sheets of paper, is $3360.  ONE MILLION sheets, you ask?  Yes, because you must buy lots of 1000 pieces and each sheet can be used 1000 times.  So, essentially 1,000,000 printouts.  Total cost for the printer and a theoretical 1,000,000 sheets of paper?  $8860.

One way that companies are pushing going green  (in my full time job as well) is to try to reduce paper printouts at the office printers.  At my office, ALL printers are set to print out on two sides and recently they have taken away personal printers in hopes of deterring employees from printing out unnecesary items.  No matter what, though, people will still be using printouts, and most of the time, after they are used, they are immediatly thrown into the trash or recycling.  But what if there was a way to print out something and then re-use the paper??  Seems like a crazy concept, that would take lots of technology to recycle paper into a usable sheet.   Well, the PrePeat printer can do just that, except the paper is not paper, it's a rewritable PET plastic.
