iPadJailbreakSomeone managed to get their hands on an iPad 3G early, and apparently managed to successfully jailbreak it and release a how-to guide.  It seems that the 3G doesn’t have any extra protection when compared to the wi-fi model, or at the very least none that would protect from the tried and true iPad breaks that are already out there.  Hopefully, Apple won’t be sending any more iAgents to kick down any doors over this.

OpenBootIf you want evidence of the fact that anyone can run Android for essentially anything, then look no further than David Wong.  This guy actually installed an Android emulator on his iPhone.  By his own admission, the process is still well within the “alpha stage” and it’s still ridiculously buggy, but there is a handheld out there that is legitimately running both Apple and Android OS.  This fact alone creates a glimmer of hope at the end of the OS war tunnel, where everyone has the capacity to run all apps and app developers don’t have to alienate half of the market by choosing only one platform.

LinuxPenguinSo the idea of having a totally unlocked phone appeals to you, and the technical difficulties of having an older generation of smartphone don’t particularly bother you, but there’s still one problem: WebOS sucks.  It’s been established that their lack of ability to properly support WebOs is the reason that Palm is going to go bankrupt the next two years.  There aren’t enough apps and there is hardly any bug troubleshooting or updates anymore.  Have no fear however, there is a way out.  Because Palm is releasing the actual unlock codes, and not just offering an unlock service, this permanently unlocks the phone.  It will even persist through something like a hack to make it run on Linux.

PalmPreUnlockFor every great corporate fall, there will be scavengers to pick up the pieces and benefit from the leftover infrastructure.  Fortunately in the case of Palm’s failure, the beneficiary of the scavenging rights seems to be consumers.  The makers of the Palm Pre have just released the official SIM card release codes as a last ditch effort to give consumers a reason to want the product.

MindHackSometimes with all the extremely useful but otherwise unglamorous advances being made in technology today (like multitasking) it is sometimes easy to forget that we are in-fact living in a science fiction wonderland. You can always leave it up to hacker culture to remind us of the true wonders of the modern world. For instance, the hacking enthusiasts over at Frontier Nerds have just released both hardware and software hacks for the new EEG computing technology, which has previously been used as novelty toys. Yes, that’s right, somebody has figured how to fundamentally manipulate and draw data from a toy that is designed to (at least on some level) read minds.

Solarbotics not only offers a full range of solar-powered robotic kits.  In addition to these little green tech gadgets, Solarbotics offers solar cells that generate voltage in a small area, enough voltage to power small electronic devices.  They offer cell options ranging from 1/2 volts up to 8 volts, but offer to design one to fit your needs if you'll buy enough of them.  Prices go as high as $11 for one cell, or a little less if you buy in bulk (bulk is considered more than one, except in the smallest cell).

The Photopopper Photovore 5.0 is a cute little solar-powered do-it-yourself robot by Solarbotics.  Photopopper is a very smart light-seeking, obstacle avoiding robot with high efficiency motors.  With these motors and circuitry, he can move a distance of 3.3 feet in under a minute.   He uses "eyes" that are infared detectors, which make him attracted to light.  His antennae are sensors that help him to avoid obstacles.  Version 5.0 is an upgrade from previous versions, being twice as fast and looking fancier with updated electronics and a sleek gold trim.

Looking for a hobby to fill up your spare time?  Want to be kind to the earth and go green with your new hobby?  Enjoy using your hands and building models and gadgets?  Well, consider yourself the perfect candidate to be a customer of Solarbotics!  Dave Hrynkiw, the president of Solarbotics, discovered BEAM technology in 1992 and by 1994 there was enough interest in his hobby that he turned it into a business.  BEAM technology (acronym for Biology, Electronics, Aesthetics, and Mechanics) was invented by Mark Tilden in 1989.  His techniques combined simple electronics and mechanics to create robots.  Often, the mechanics of his creations were solar-powered.

P2TVFor the past few years, with the advent of services like Hulu, and Skype, it has become apparent that the data-streams are merging.  What this means is that sometime in the very near future, the various digital media that we have considered separate for so long (internet, television, telephone etc...) may well become one great interactive stream of information that encompasses all the potential functions of it's component parts.

Cooking CapsulesCooking Capsules: This application may well revolutionize the way we view the culinary arts.  Long ago, learning to prepare a dish meant being taught by an older and wiser chef.  Later, cook-books allowed for further proliferation of recipes, and fidelity in recreation.  In the digital age the internet and television came up with interactive cooking secrets, that a truly great recipe could spread to dinner tables across the world.  Now, all you need to do is tell your phone what you want to make, and for how many, and it will give you instructions in real time to help prepare your meal.
