Photography Heals Old Wounds in Vietnam

25 Aug, 2009 | by EmilyK

The Pho Hien Photo Club is bringing together photographers from across Vietnam. Their resources are limited, but what they lack in money, they make up for in passion.

The group meets once a month to share photos and ideas. The members' dedication has helped them to overcome obstacles like limited equipment.  "Ideas are more important than equipment. Even with a small camera we can take nice photos," Le Hao, the club's director, told Viet Nam News.

Many in the club served in the Vietnam Army during the Vietnam war, and used cameras for various duties including map making. "Now, as a member of Pho Hien Club, I am happy with my life," said Le Hao, who is among the members who fought.

Pho Hien members have organized trips around the country for inspiration, as well as conferences with other clubs. Some have received recognition from the Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists.

Even with money being so tight, these photographers are willing to make sacrifices simply for the love of their art. "We are not rich and we do not take photos to sell, so spending money on this pleasure can be difficult for us. We have had to save money in secret in order to support our passion and maintain our club for so long," said veteran and club member Van Binh.
