Recently, Yahoo decided to assert its ownership of Flickr by tacking on "from Yahoo!" to the end of the traditional logo. Needless to say, Flickr devotees are not happy with this change. In response, several programmers have developed patches that do everything from cover the Y! to amp up the site.
For Firefox there's the Quickr Flickr, a script based patch that works through the Greasemonkey add on. The mastermind is by Dustin Diaz, a photographer and Twitter engineer. The big pluses to the script are keyboard shortcuts and improved commenting functions.
After seeing how helpful Dustin's script was to Firefox users, gmail programmer Dan Pupius developed his own version for Chrome called Fittr Flickr. This fix includes the keyboard shortcuts, link to flic.kr short url and easy photo resizing. Fittr also links to Big Huge Labs, a site with tons of creative projects for your photos.
While these fixes are great for the browser savvy among us, many of the internet populus are inevitably going to miss out. The time may have come for Flickr to give their site a much needed update. That and stop censoring user photos. Perhaps soon it will be time for a change...
