Any documentary nuts out there? Well now we can appease our photography and documentary nerd cravings at the same time with a bio piece about iconic architectural photographer Julius Shulman.
The film is Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman. First-time director Eric Bricker follows Shulman's work documenting modernist architecture movement in California.
Shulman died this past July at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 98. Visual Acoustics includes some of the last interview footage of the photographer and will serve as a great monument to his career.
Shulman photos played a crucial role in exposing the world to the work of famous modernists such as Richard Neutra and Frank Lloyd Wright. Neutra has this to say about Shulman's work:
" Film [is] stronger, and good glossy prints are easier [to] ship than brute concrete, stainless steel or even ideas," reported the LA Times.
The documentary is playing in Manhattan today and in Los Angeles next friday. For more screenings, check the film's site here. If you don't live near one of the cities listed, don't worry... There's always dvd! I've already saved it to my Netflix queue for when it comes out.
