HDR guru experiments with "A New Kind of Photography"

Amvona Blog       16 Oct, 2009 | by EmilyK

What lies in between video and photography? During a recent trip to Japan, Trey Ratcliff went about asking this question. The result is a new breed of photography that has us theorizing about how he did it.

This week, Trey posted a video clip, included below, called "The Moments Between" to his blog Stuck in Customs. Except, the content is not quite video. Trey invited his Twitter followers to suggest names for the new style. Since then, @treyratcliff has exploded with ideas and retweets.

While he has not yet revealed his technique to the public, but with the help of one of our engineers, I may have a theory that it involves over sampling. Essentially this would involve capturing images at a certain frame per seconds and then downconverting to a lower fps by removing certain frames. This effect would be very tedious if done by hand, but is much easier with the help of digital editing software.

So did we get it right?

When he is not inventing new methods of photography, Trey does some amazing work with HDR. While in Japan he had the opportunity get his sensor cleaned at Nikon headquarters for $10, making his the envy of Nikon users everywhere. The ultra-clean sensor made for some tremendous shots like the one above.

High Dynamic Range photography or HDR involves take one, or a series of photos and processing them to show a high range between the light and dark area. We've been talking about sensors a lot this month, and this is one example of when an awesome sensor pays off. Trey does a great job of walking you through the technique in the free tutorial on his site.

"The Moments Between" claims to be only episode one, so hopefully we can expect some more of this cool new technique soon. In the mean time, we will wait on baited breath for Trey's how to guide to see if our hypothesis is right.
