Google Photographs the World with Trikes

Amvona Blog       28 Aug, 2009 | by EmilyK

The street view option on Google Maps is sweet.  I am always disappointed when an area doesn't have it. In the UK, Google is using some pretty kooky tricycles to take snap shots of the country's numerous foot paths.

The trikes look like something out of a bad scifi movie from the 80's. The Gtrike consists of a bicycle in the front, and a trailer equipped with the Street View camera in the back. The camera itself is mounted on a pole and looks like it consists of at least eight different lenses.

One of the first stops on the trike's route is Loch Ness and the Urquart Castle. After that, it is off to a number of other spots that residents voted for online.

It is great to see Britain  embracing Google. Switzerland has not been so accepting. Earlier this week they tried to block Street View claiming it violated the privacy of their citizens. Their major gripe is the fact that the function fails to blur face and license plates. Google is fighting the Swiss. We'll see how that goes.

In the mean time, I'd love to take a turn on one of those trikes. It looks like fun! Goofy, but fun!
