Goodbye free software, Hello Photoshop.com!

So back at the end of June, Adobe announced that it would no longer offer the Photshop Album Starter Edition, a free stripped down version of the popular editing software. Instead they launched Photoshop.com, an online digital imaging hub.

With a free basic membership, users recieve 2GB of storage. Need more? The Plus Level is about $70 a year for 20GB or $130 for 100GB. Plus membership also gives you access to album templates and more editing effects than the basic level.

Just as a warning, be careful of relying on cloud, aka online, backups of your photos folks. We've seen others burned before.

The flash driven site is quite a bit slower than I had hoped. The editing tools are what you'd expect, including red-eye, Touchup, and light and color options. Noticeably missing, however, is that wonderful magic wand tool and the magnetic lasso... two of my Photoshop favorites.

In addition to editing, Photoshop.com has some pretty cool sharing features. Notably, the ability to publish slideshows to a number of platforms including facebook, wordpress and iGoogle. The site also has a friend function so you can follow other users' work.

Overall, it is nice that Adobe is trying to preserve a free version of Photoshop, but the site has a few downfalls. In addition to the slow load speeds, there is no offline option. If you are looking for a free online image editing, why not try Picassa instead. It's a heck of a lot faster, and you can download an application and work offline. And as far as the social networking side of things goes, wait till you see what we have in store for Flekt... all I'm saying is you'll never go back to slow flash again.
