From a Tom Chambers Photo to a Song in Two Days

13 Oct, 2009 | by EmilyK

It is always cool to see different mediums inspire each other. In a new series called Project Song,  the folks at NPR challenge musicians to take a photograph and record a song about it in two days. Talk about a time crunch!

The master mind, or evil genius, behind the show is  Bob Boilen who has been working with NPR since 1988. It was Bob that started All Songs Considered which, with the help of full concert podcasts and unreleased music previews, has become a forerunner in internet and traditional radio integration.

Bob challenges his guests to take a song from inspiration to recording in two days, no small feat by any means.  First Bob presents the artist with a series of photographs and a list of words. They must then choose one of each for their song.

The most recent victims of Project Song were Chris Walla, of Death Cab for Cutie, and J. Robbins, from Jawbox and burning airlines. They chose the above photo by Tom Chambers and the word cerebral. After two days, the pair created 'Mercury' a haunting song about global warming. You can hear the song, or watch the whole writing process online.

As far as muse-like images go, Tom Chambers' were a great choice for . Tom uses his Nikon D300 and several medium format cameras including the Maiya Pro TL and the Fuji Rangefinder, to capture all the elements of his final work, be they landscape, wildlife or portraits. He then combines these elements using Photoshop to create the final image. While many have referred to his work as a collage, the adept nature in which he merges the shots makes for a very unified looking print.

The imagination and emotion conveyed in Tom's work "Black Dog's Retreat" served as a great starting point for Chris and J.'s song. Why not try this experiment the other way around? Your song is "Deja Vu" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Your word is eager. Go!
