Canon tries for a bigger slice of the pro market

Pixels, and Sensors and HD video... Oh My! Canon released the EOS-1D Mark IV today, adding another contender to the heavyweight pro-level camera crowd.

The mantra for this new EOS  Digital is to give the consumers what they ask for. With this in mind, Canon has done everything from tweeking the white balance to making a shutter button that's easy to push with gloves on.

"The... Mark IV allows photographers to be the first to get the highest quality images to picture desks in what is becoming an increasingly competitive market," said Mr. Shinbori, a Senior General Manager at Canon.

Some other features include increase water-resistance, a 100 percent coverage LCD screen,  and a new 45-point AF system that has increased sensitivity for better detail capture at multiple speeds. This all adds up to what may be the outdoor photographer's dream.

So how does it compare to the new Nikon D3s announced last week?  Well, the Nikon does have a bigger sensor, coming in at 36 x 23.9 mm as opposed to the Mark IV's 27.9 x 18.6mm. Canon, however, has managed to squeeze in more pixels with 16.1 to the Nikon's 12.1.

The Mark IV is set to go on sale in December and will cost $4999.00, slightly cheaper than the D3s.

With all these big shot cameras hitting the market, it looks like Olympic athletes won't be the only ones competing this winter.
